Development Plan - Add Objectives (Legacy)

Each development plan contains objectives that lead users to achieve their development goals. Objectives are goals or target areas of the plan. For example, if development plan is intended to improve a user's communication skills, objectives for that development plan may be to improve writing skills and become a better public speaker. Each objective must contain at least one training items or action steps. Training items are courses, curricula, library items, etc. that help users achieve their objective. Action steps are actions users should take to achieve their objective.

The overall due date for a development plan is the latest due date for the training items and action steps within the development plan. For example, if a plan has one objective with two training items whose due dates are August 15 and November 15, the due date for the plan is November 15.

To add an objective to your development plan, select the Add Objective link.

When the Add Objective link is selected, this creates a new objective for which you must enter a title in the Objective Title field. The character limit for this field is 50 characters.

  • From the drop-down list, select a category for the objective. The available objective categories are determined by the system administrator. If there are no available objective categories, this drop-down list does not appear.
  • Next to the objective, there are the following options:
Icon Option Description
Add Training Item

Click this icon to add a training item to the objective. This opens the Select Training pop-up where you are able to select from all available training, but the training should help you to achieve the associated objective. This training item must be completed in order to complete the objective and the development plan. Note: Only the following training types cannot be added to a development plan: Certification, Cohort, Event, Program, Video.

Set a due date for the item using the calendar feature next to the training item or enter a date. When the item is added, the due date defaults to a date according to the preferences settings chosen by the administrator, but the user may override the due date if appropriate.

The same training item cannot be added to a single plan twice.

Training Items can be deleted by clicking the Delete icon next to the training item.

Note: You must have the Learning functionality to add training items to an objective.

Add Action Step Click this icon to add an action step to the objective. This adds an empty Action Step text field in which you describe an action that is related to achieving the associated objective. This action step must be completed in order to complete the objective and the development plan. The character limit for this field is 3,000. Next to the action step name, the completion progress percentage field appears. This is where the percentage complete is updated to mark progress for the item. If there is already progress made on the action step at the time it is added to the plan, you may update the percentage complete at that time. If the step has not been started, enter 0, and if the step is complete, enter 100. Set a due date for the action using the calendar feature next to the action step or enter a date. Action steps can be deleted by clicking the Delete icon next to the action step.
Delete Click this icon to delete the objective and all training items and action steps within it.
  • Objectives, training items, and action steps can be resorted by dragging and dropping them into the correct position. Training items and action steps can also be moved to another objective by dragging and dropping them. To do so, click somewhere on the objective line or training/action step line and drag the item to its new position.

To add a recommended objective or training item, click the Add Recommended Training link. You are taken to the Recommended Objectives and Training page where you can view recommended objectives and training based on competency models, competency assessment, and past plans. See Development Plan - Add Recommended Training (Legacy). If an objective is added from a past plan, that objective is added to the end of the development plan. If a recommended training item is selected, that training item is added as a part of a new objective, and the new objective is given the name of the item from which the training item is added. For example, if a recommended training item is added from a competency model, the objective is given the name of the corresponding competency, and if a recommended training item is added from an existing development plan, the objective is given the name of the objective from the previous dev plan.
